The 5th UK National Chinese Essay/Story Writing Competition
Registration Deadline: 20th March 2010

The UK Association for the Promotion of Chinese Education works in partnership with the Aylesbury Grammar School, Worthing College, Sussex University, Edinburgh Chinese School and London Mandarin Chinese School to launch the 5th UK national Chinese essay/story writing competition. We invite all schools to take part in this competition. Please note that the deadline is on 20th March 2010.

Who Can Participate

Learners who study Chinese in community school, primary or secondary school, college, adult sector or university in Britain. The recommended work should be sent through the education institute on or before the deadline.

What to Write About

It must be the participants’ own original work. Candidates are free to choose the topics. They can also choose one of the following topics. Food, transportation, education and employment, leisure and Chinese festivals, energy, pollution and protect the environment.

Context and Genre

Writing can be in any genre to suit their purpose and should be from 100 to 500 characters Students can also use“Better city, better life”as the main theme, design their own topics and write not less than 300 for this one. All entries can be either typed or handwritten. If hand written, please write on a square boxed sheet. Traditional or simplified characters are equally acceptable.

Categories

The writings will be classified according to the following categories. Chinese students please refer to the Chinese flyer and use the Chinese Entry Form
1. Chinese (Chinese candidates who have studied for more than 4 years in China).
2. British Chinese (British born Chinese, Chinese who had been in China for up to or less than 4 years or one of the parents is non Chinese)
3. Non-native speakers (both parents or foster parents are not Chinese origin).

Awards

The winners’ list will be announced in May. There will be certificates classified as first class, second class and third class for each category group. The winners of Non native speakers group will be awarded by book voucher.

Additional Notes

There will be no entry fee for this competition. Each competitor is limited to one piece of work. Manuscripts will not be returned. Copyright will be held by the organiser.
